MIA PHOTO FAIR… AND BEYOND

The MIA Photo Fair is the spring event for international photography and it is held in Milan, Italy from April 11 to 14… for its 13th edition… under the direction of Francesca Malgara. A cultural event not to be missed for art lovers and collectors! A certain number of prizes also reward photographers on this occasion.

This year, the fair will have as its common thread the theme of “Change”… opening broad perspectives to the forms of expression and subjects represented… with a potentially engaged look (ethico-social, cultural issues, etc.)… During these 4 days, the visitor will be both an actor and a witness to change… even the incarnation of his own change. It can all be about motivating change, provoking it, perceiving it, undergoing it… or even reacting.

The MIA Photo Fair is part of a collective and collaborative dynamic, bringing together different cultural actors and partners in order to highlight the importance of photography and, particularly this year, the role of collectors in its international influence. This is why around fifty of the works exhibited will come from private collections… like so many personal, unpublished and intimate stories that are told through the artist, the work, the viewer or its owner. Photography is exhibited but it is also intended to be experienced. Exhibiting works from private collections also means establishing a unique time for sharing, meeting and exchange, by allowing the public to discover and enjoy works that would not otherwise be visible.

In order to adopt an original and diversified approach, the annual theme has been broken down into several projects around which the galleries, the scientific committee, curators and collectors converge to offer a narrative of change.

REPORTAGE BEYOND REPORTAGE

A first curatorial axis was undertaken by Emanuela Mazzonis around the notion of landscape and its transformation. The landscape is at the heart of change and vice versa… since it is shaped by the elements, by seasons, by man, by climate change, conflicts, urban planning… The changes that impact the landscape over time question the notion of balance… between construction and destruction… beauty and ugliness… natural and artificial… but also between the past and the present. The landscape tells a story… that of anthropization.

ACROSS THE MEDITERRANEAN

Curator Rischa Paterlini invites the visitor around the Mediterranean; putting into perspective the human relationships that are established beyond borders. It is an invitation to travel to discover the other and elsewhere… not so distant… an ordinary exoticism. It is an encounter made of disparities (social, beliefs, geographic, etc.) but at the same time similarities. A bond then emerges both in space and in time… a bond between men.

BEYOND PHOTOGRAPHY – DIALOGUE

Domenico de Cherico has focused his curatorial attention on the question of dialogue. It goes beyond photography by connecting it with all other plastic forms (painting, performance, video, mapping, etc.). It gives the form a sort of universality and freedom to free itself from narrative limits and decompartmentalize reflection. Thought, like change, is not unique, hermetic or isolated… Forms interact, complement or reinforce each other like so many languages… rich in their plurality. Photography becomes a field of possibilities and a meeting place where everyone expresses themselves freely and in their own way to serve the idea. The change then takes on a whole new dimension and scope… it is a global change.

PHOTOGRAPHY TODAY

A certain number of conferences and discussions will also take place around current thoughts on photography… whether it be the dematerialization of images, NFTs or even the materiality of the medium today. A perspective for the future…
